Welding breakthrough could revolutionize manufacturing

Researchers from Heriot-Watt University in the UK have managed to weld glass and metal together using lasers. This is a major breakthrough in welding technology that will enable extremely strong joints to be created by the joining of transparent materials such as glass or crystals to metals, including aluminum or titanium.

The welding of these surfaces will greatly simplify the design and manufacturing of projects that use both types of materials. Traditionally, these materials were adhered together using chemical adhesives. This new process will remove the necessity for the use of glues and adhesives.
